We are all about Slow Fashion!
We always get asked when we will be releasing new designs or colours, but being a slow fashion brand means that we won't have as many new releases as other brands out there.
To understand why Slow Fashion is so important, we have to look at the harsh reality of its opposite, Fast Fashion.
Fast Fashion is the mass production of cheap, poor quality clothing based on the latest trends, imitated in the shortest possible time.
Why is Fast Fashion Bad?
- 92 million tons of fashion get thrown away each and every year
- 20% of industrial water pollution comes from treating and dyeing textiles
The fashion industry emits 10% of global greenhouse gases
It takes 2,700 litres of water to produce one non-organic cotton shirt (enough for one person to drink in 3 years)
- The average fashion worker in Bangladesh (the world's second largest fashion producer) earns only $2-$3 a day (the lowest paid garment workers in the world), often under very bad working conditions
- Pesticides and chemicals used in fast fashion production pollute the earth for decades to come
What is Slow Fashion?
It encompasses both customers and producers, to consume and create fashion consciously and with integrity. Garments are mostly made from environmentally friendly materials or recycled textiles along with environmentally friendly production. Clothes are well-made, more durable and of higher quality. Slow fashion also supports buying vintage or second hand clothes, redesigning old clothes and shopping from smaller local producers.
The Venn diagram above will help visualise the three components of Slow Fashion.
is when a brand minimises the impact of which clothing production has on the environment. This can include manufacturing with eco-friendly techniques, the use of sustainable fabrics such as recycled fabrics, fabrics made from sustainably grown crops and dead stock fabric. It also involves reducing the environmental impact of transporting goods.
considers both the social impact and ethics behind a brand. It ensures that the people employed to create the clothing are treated with respect and are payed a fair living wage in safe and healthy working conditions. Ethical fashion also includes animal rights by choosing to create vegan apparel.
is when the garments are made of high-quality materials, are less trend-driven and more time-driven and built to last. When you have a closet full of cheaply made trendy items that aren't really your style, the individual items don't mean as much. Lasting fashion is also about supporting traditional methods of clothing making as well as dyeing techniques which add meaning and value to the items.
How is Outfyt a Slow Fashion Brand?
Sustainability starts with the design process, therefore we select the most durable and high quality certified eco friendly materials we can find on the market. All our designs are aimed to stay current disregarding fashion fads and can be worn for different occasions to maximise each garments usage.
To make sure that we don't end up with dead stock we produce collections in low quantities to ensure we sell out. Production of eco friendly garments in ethical factories isn't comparable to the low cost of mass production factories. Therefore, we work with small profit margins in order to be able to price each garment at an affordable sales price to the consumer. This way we hope to encourage each and every one to choose sustainable Slow Fashion over mass produced Fast Fashion.

Here are a few ways to get started:
Build a capsule wardrobe - make sure your clothes are not only stylish but practical and will fit your lifestyle.
Make thoughtful purchases - try not to shop on impulse and only buy what you need. When purchasing something think about whether it will match the pieces in your current wardrobe. Make sure what you are buying is something you can wear for years to come.
Do your research - When you find a new slow fashion brand, read about their brand story and approach to sustainability. Are they really a slow fashion brand or are they greenwashing? If you have unanswered questions send the brand an email or contact them on social media.
Prolong the life of your garments - Swap clothes with friends or donate your old clothes to someone who would love and use them. If you have old Outfyt activewear that does not fit you anymore you can exchange them at Outfyt for a discount. The old items will be sold at a discount and the profit will be donated to Healthy Seas for the recovery of plastic waste from the ocean.
